I used to try and come up with some clever or witty banter to go along with the more banal explanation of just what had gone on while I was working on the place in Big Bend. I'm tired and will just go with the banal. After building the 65 bug for Ayrton, I just could not conceive of even one more job on a vehicle while working in the dirt. I wanted a SLAB! I had lied to Karol about what I was doing for weeks and weeks. I had convinced her that I was working on the pressing assignment of lowering the single cab. In reality I had already decided to make that totally useless (until after 8 pm)Porch into a somewhat functional area of interest. It was great if you love standing on concrete while the sun beats you up. I put up metal that I bought from Phil, painted it and stretched shade cloth across it to make the area more inhabitable. Karol was supremely surprised . That's when I sprung my trap. I convinced her that in no time we could build a slab, since I already had all the materials right there along with a mixer! She fell for it! I soon realized that "in no time" was not the best way to characterize the actual event. It took almost every day of her 2 week visit to accomplish what soon was considered an event comparable to the Bataan death march,or the trail of tears. Not to diminish them at all, but to honor their struggle with our own. Once again when you bite off more than you can chew...all you can do is chew. Karol still claims to be crippled in both hands from moving no less than one and 3/4 dump truck loads of aggregate WITH HER BARE HANDS. We fed the insatiable gaping maw of the Machine. We decided to name it after the machine in Metropolis. Having figured out the best way to build this was in 5 X 6.5 foot sections, I assumed it would go quickly and I could not have been more wrong. Half way through, Karol suggested we do one section in the morning and one in the evening to speed things up. But we were too beat after one section to ever even consider doing another. I couldn't wait for the slab to cure and I put two VW's on it within minutes of completion. I am very happy and very appreciative of all the work that Karol put in on the project. She didn't really have to do that. NOT!............seeya R Rustyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01973047720563986814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6017041940856579883.post-29089810293014292332015-06-20T07:01:00.000-07:002015-10-21T22:20:56.611-07:00It has been almost a year since I posted anything. A lot has happened I suppose. Sometimes I don't really see the point in putting up these words and pictures. But if anyone checks this site they will hopefully find some images that will please the eye. That is if I can figure out how to load them. I was gone from the project for most of that time. My Mom was having health problems. I returned for a while and worked on a 65 vw for my youngest (she wants something unique to drive around ). I question the wisdom of trading a 2001 Civic for a 65 bug....no ..I take that back. I also worked on the porch area of the rock house. I called Mike Engeleman to goad him into coming out and photographing the wildflower bloom and he took me up on it. We spent a couple of days wandering around and taking pix. Found more weird stacked rocks to photograph and some whiskey got in my mouth also. Elenore Foster my neighbor told me that it had been 25 years or so since the last bloom of that magnitude had happened. And even then it was not quite what we experienced this year. Mom took a downturn and passed four days after my return to Kilgore.Still getting used to that. Truly the end of an era. If there is any good in me, then it came from her. I got back in time to show the pictures to her. She looked forward to seeing the progress I had made, on the house. And any unusual photos that I might come up with. I'll be heading back sometime in July. ..........R<a some work on the ceiling. Put up foam board and fiberglass insulation. Then had to try and figure out a way to make it look alright. I ripped scrap wood and used drywall mud mixed with paint from Habitat restore to finish the look. The main cost of the ceiling was the insulation and foam board. The mud was cheap , the paint was cheap and the wood was free. Oddly digital can not relate to analog. I do all of my work without the aid of computer. This may seem to be an odd approach but I feel that some one should address the situation. The respect that I hold for the people that have come before me makes me know that that life without a computer is not wasted. Think about it. dmcRustyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01973047720563986814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6017041940856579883.post-15630698853564137352014-02-22T17:23:00.000-08:002014-02-22T17:23:40.890-08:00I headed home last Sat. and on the way dropped by 500 X, a gallery my daughters were showing in near Fair Park in Dallas. They came out to help on the project right after Christmas and stayed a couple of weeks along with Karol and Alex. We were able to work on the ceiling and walls, trim and other aspects of the build. We brought furniture along just to see how things would look when we get done. As always the bulk of the build gets done when the family gets together .....somebody's got to bail the ol man out when he bites off more than he can chew! I am very pleased with the way the project is turning out. After everyone went back to their respective lives I stayed on doing more finish work and avoiding the last room that is still quite rough. The Bath! I convinced myself that almost anything was more important. So much so that one day I thought it would be a great idea to move all the wood off the porch, borrow an above ground pool, pump all the water out of the cement pond and paint it black in hopes that it would warm the water enough to make it tolerable. Even last Aug. it was a might cold. Then pump the water back in and build a solar water heater out of A BOX OF SCRAPS! Sorry about the Tony Stark in the cave reference. Any way it's a bunch more of the same and some day I will be done. But until then I will continue, with the support of my all too tolerant family. Oh yeah we also did some paint and linseed oiling to the walls and hung some paintings to add extra color in a purpose
I have been persuaded to continue my blog by members of my family that are interested in the progress of the rock house. We proceed. I have succeeded in achieving my goal of making the rock house operational before the end of this year. We now have electricity, water, and sewer. Sinks and shower, also a water heater. The house now has more insulation and is sealed from the elements much better. Adobe floors throughout and most of the ceiling in place. There is much more trim and paint work to be done and the ceiling in the bedrooms need to be finished. I have been on site for a record amount of time this year. Pulling two month tours at a time to try and finish this thing before new year. I have had help from time to time with major parts of the project like the ceiling and floor. Karol and the girls are coming out after Christmas to help do finish work. The next pictures will reveal the finished product. We will see the results of the "vision" good and bad. We have continued to work with scrounged material for the majority of the project to keep the costs down and they give a look that is not easy to reproduce with new. I have worked backwards from most in the sense that my materials have dictated the design rather than the design coming first. I would have a problem that needed solving and would look for whatever material I might happen to have enough of to complete said problem, hoping that I could figure a way to make it look right. I am pleased so far with the results. Not to say it couldn't be done better. But another criteria was also always on my mind. Time. I have done this project and all aspects of it as quickly as I could. And it shows. I would sacrifice fit and finish often for expedeincy. Perfection is the enemy of good. I'll try now to enter some pictures...........RRustyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01973047720563986814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6017041940856579883.post-43990419262159445312013-09-11T14:16:00.005-07:002013-09-11T14:16:47.089-07:00LAST POST tired of the internetRustyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01973047720563986814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6017041940856579883.post-73550992109723070842013-09-11T14:11:00.001-07:002013-09-11T14:11:56.510-07:00The last post

Requires little thought and a lot of hustle. Shoveling the dirt from down on the desert floor into a truck, mixing it with water in a wheelbarrow, placing it on the floor, leveling and trowling. Then letting it dry and applying coats of linseed oil. I allow it to dry quickly and crack. Then I go back and fill the cracks. Not much else going on. I bought Jerry Brewster's VW dune buggy. And worked on it some. Got to visit with friends some. Returned for the big "Opening" that my "Girls" had in a "Dallas" art gallery. I will try and add some pictures. The opening was great and everyone had a good time. Ayrton's Meattroplis has been in the works for amost two years. And I really am in love with one of Bailey's new paintings. I am heading back in a week to try and get the water system going. There is water in the tanks, now to get it in the house. Seeya.........R
I also needed to go see our youngest up in Denton and help her with some welding that will be part of the long anticipated unveiling of the "Meatropolis" sculpture. The last two trips have been all about the ceiling. Using metal scrounged from a building in Stonewall, (just outside of Fredricksburg) some 2x6s from an old deck John Spradlin kindly gave us and more wood from the old Wylie farmhouse generously donated by the lovely Lisa. The building in Stonewall was hit by a tornado in 2001 and lost its roof. Mr. Alton Klein alowed Karol and I to take anything we could use from the old house for 150 bucks. Thank you Mr. Klein. I installed a 2 inch adobe floor in the bath and worked on the front room ceiling for a few weeks before Karol arrived and helped me finish the install. We began caulking the gaps (and there were many) and did some painting with some flat white given to us by Tessa Wingfield, thanks T.W. When we ran out of paint and caulk we transitioned to the master bedroom, emptied it of all the materials stored there and started another adobe floor. Karol is what we call here in the oilfield "a hand." She was matching me shovel for shovel and hung tough for what I affectionately call an old school "thrash." Three days of brutal labor that would, in the end , give us another beautiful floor. After it dries we will oil it with linseed oil. I did this in the adobe house and was really pleased. Hope to finish this house by Christmas and some day have one Hell of a double house warming! Heading out tomorrow for more abuse. Maybe it will have warmed up a little by the time I get back.................R

No post since Oct. A lot has happened since then. First of all let me thank Karol, Alex, Ayrton,Space, and Bailey for the tremendous help. With that team there, we just steamrolled through the problems. Strong backs and strong minds...."hey fugiddaboutit" First problem, move a 16 ft. conference table from the auction site where I got it, into the rock house. That was a gargantuan effort in itself! Ask me about it someday. Second, figure out where to put the monster so it looks right in the rock house. (You would not believe the arguing that ensued over that.) You see, the poles I put in the room to hold up the roof were in the way. I was going to have the poles go right through the table. Then I realized that I had six 2x12s just laying there from a carport I wrecked out. I decided to use those to support the gluelams instead of the poles and move the poles over to support the 2x12s. I could also incorporate them into the bar. I was riding high and strutting all around when we got that in. It worked perfectly! As we built up the bar I didn't like the look of the poles in front and decided to build huge brackets and bolt the two main support beams togeather and remove two of the poles. Now most of the weight of the roof is focused on the remaining two poles. It looked so much better that I began to strut again. (no kiddin) The ideas were coming and the execution of said ideas was implemented with extreme prejudice. Not stopping there, Karol and I applied white cement to the outside of the adobe to reflect the blistering sun and keep the walls from heating up so much this year. As if that were not enough(and believe me I'm trying to keep this short) Karol started finding all sorts of artifacts. Metates, manos, scrapers and to top it off on the last day we were there, late in the afternoon when we were loading up, she started finding petroglyphs! She looked in a book and discovered that one represented a comet and one a snake. We knew about the stacked rocks by the driveway but never took pictures. I found another large rock that must have been placed there. These are all right at the adobe house. There is a lot more but I have been trying to keep my entries short and pictures few so as not to bore everyone to death. (too late) I have been home less than a week and am ready to return asap. Maybe next week! Karol will come out later. She cleaned out much of the bus and is ready for me to knock the axles out and turn it into a shop/storage bldg. Maybe I will surprise her when she gets back out. adios......RRustyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01973047720563986814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6017041940856579883.post-91942234112172668202012-10-19T09:26:00.000-07:002012-10-19T09:26:12.397-07:00I have not updated this blog from the last trip, I suppose, because I have blocked out much if it from my already feeble memory. Karol, once again, was an incredible asset to the project. Painting the roof and picking up the giant mess I have left behind in the building process. Although before we got started in earnest we did quite a bit of rock hunting. Well now, that is to say Karol was hunting for the terrestrial kind while I was on the hunt for meteorites. I am pretty sure I have found one at least. You would not believe how many rocks will stick to a magnet. I also found an incredible scraper/ knife. It is very old (maybe 8,000 years) according to Ring. Karol found an awsome flint hand axe! We mounted a meter can and disconnect, ran conduit, pulled wire and hooked up the breaker box inside the rock house. When the electric co. came out to hook us up we were then told to rip the boxes out so they could install their meter and disconnect. That is the short version. We did more reinforcing to the metal bldg. to keep it from blowing away. Did more experiments with white cement as a reflective coating for the adobe. Looks like we are just going to use white latex paint. The image to the right that looks like it might be the surface of some alien moon orbiting jupiter is in fact my butt..........with shingles. Note to self...don't get so stressed out over what people think about you. You might just break out with something! The other picture is of the national weather service background reflectivity radar. If you watch it you will see wierd stuff that does not make any sense. I think it is from the spraying. I have a computer full of images of the chemtrails. The "haze" is everywhere. Check at commercials now, sky is almost always hazy in them. ...look into it. I'm heading back in a few days to continue the work. Don't know if I can get the rock house on line by the end of the year. When you bite off more than you can chew.....all you can do is chew!Rustyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01973047720563986814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6017041940856579883.post-18251895545834443222012-06-18T00:08:00.000-07:002012-06-18T17:24:11.728-07:00Karol and I have returned from a month in the desert.....alone....together....we are still married. Now that my lovely wife has retired from Kilgore, she has time to spend with me on the project. We made a lot of headway at the adobe which I have been neglecting since I started on the rock house. During one rather spirited storm out of the south, I discovered the metal building's roof moving like a drum head. My plans changed quickly to reinforcing the metal building. We were able to add on to it, which stabilized the building and gave me a place to put solar panels that would power the freezer so I could move it out of the adobe and into the trailer. It won't heat up the house now. The shade it provides is wonderful. I had an idea to whitewash the adobe to keep the walls from absorbing so much direct sunlight and heat. It really makes the walls much cooler. Karol, who only weeks ago was a powerful administrator at a junior college was reduced to grinding lime that had hardened, into powder that I mixed into whitewash and applied to the walls that had been catching the sun. We built a solar oven from some glass that was left at the rock house, some 2X12 some old v crimp roofing and fiberglass insulation that had been left behind. I did not want to deal with reflectors so I went with a design I cooked up to make use of the stuff I had laying around. It worked better than I had hoped for. Easily topping 300 degrees with no fuss. Just pop the food in the side door and get it out sometime in the afternoon! I had to use the swamp cooler in the mornings to add cool air to the adobe and keep the walls cooler. Even with all we were doing the temps still crept from the high 70's to the mid 80's inside the house. Over all the cooler weather made it quite pleasent to work all month. Hope to return soon.....we are on a roll !..... The trip with Bailey coupled with the trip with Karol have jumped the whole project ahead by leaps and bounds. Despite my chronic lethargy and general aches and pains, she was able to get a tremendous amount of wood on the walls all the while prodding dad to try and get to work before noon. Her job in the wood shop at college prepared her to work with the wood like a pro. A master cylinder replace on the 75 beetle solved the brake problem. We also attended Jerry and Eva's going away party. Lots of people were there. Followed by a great party at Phil and Regina's. Other than that it was mostly measuring, cutting and nailing. We used some of the cedar scrap from framing the windows to make a viga style support below the upper windows...a kind of catwalk to get to the roof windows on the inside above the kitchen. I, of course, forgot to take a picture. Bailey did a movie walk around with her camera that turned out great. Wish I could figure out how to put it on this site. Karol has officially retired and will probably come out to work with me, and prove once and for all that I indeed do have a wife! We hung one of the doors that were given to me by Jo and Larry. Bailey's boyfriend Ryan let me have a fantastic front door latch that is so unusual and perfect for this house. I have to continue wrecking out the Wylie house for more material. Hope to return in a month. It will be on Karol's calender now so we will go when both can go. I mentioned that I had little to show for my last effort and explained the reasons. So she told me to write that down (I think she believes that if I practice I will get as good as she is at telling stories). OK so I gamble on the weather once again and head out in Feb. Everything was going fine....for three days. That is when it came time to unload the trailer load of wood we had wrecked out of the farmhouse donated by the Wylie's. I planned to use the backside of the wood because the other side had been painted. I took my time and spent a couple of hours at it so as not to pull anything out of whack right at the beginning of my stay. One week later I was able to walk around and start back to work. The picture of the closet is the only evidence of any work that was done on the house, although in my defense, that wall continues on for many more feet. I found myself drawn to my old weakness (not that!) Volkswagens! Got the brake parts out of Austin VW, thanks Johnny Davis. I spent a lot of time working on the Beetle I now call Eleanor (not to be confused another local by the same name). At some time after the back pain had subsided enough to work at least on cars I came to notice that my left elbow had that tennis problem. Anyway some work was done but I was not happy with the overall effort. We will get em next time. Oh yeah I took pictures of the planes spewing out the chemtrails. I had hoped that moving out to BB would get me away from all that here in E Texas. I have a camera full of that stuff, and one picture of the house. Karol was thrilled. and so it goes.........RRustyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01973047720563986814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6017041940856579883.post-85923783678235178842011-12-30T13:57:00.000-08:002011-12-30T15:30:34.941-08:00Just under the wire....again!Well now then there, I just got around to the hardest part of this project, blogging about it. Not that I don't like talking about what I am doing out west, but typing is no fun for me. The title "just under the wire again" is in reference to the fact that for the second time I have barely accomplished the goal that I had set for myself at the beginning of the year. In this case it was getting the Rock house in the dry before the end of the year. Closing in the ends of the roof along with the area overlooking the lower roof, framing in new window sills, building and installing doors, and installing the windows. All along the way, bit by bit the work blocked off more and more of the wind that whipped through the place. Sadly, the Owls have had to find new residence. On a brighter note, just when I thought my good fortune of finding free building materials had played out , I recieved a call from a couple of very thoughtful (and quite attractive) women that live right here in Kilgore. Bobbie and Lisa Wylie . It seems that Lisa was perusing my blog , seeing that I was working with reclaimed materials, and thought that I might want to tear down and reuse their 100 year old family farmhouse not far from where we live! Of course I was very pleased and thankful for their generosity. Thank you so much Bobbie and Lisa! There will be pleanty of materials to finish my various projects. The wood is very nice, and straight! My good fortune held up around Thanksgiving. I was cordially invited to dine with the Foster family by Bennet, grandson to Eleanor. He, along with Mark Spurlock and Gene Foster did most all the cooking. And might I say, not as a cook, but as an expert eater, that it was absolutely delicious. Thank you, Foster family. I also had a couple of visitors right at the end of my sortie. John and Gem Hillier, from right here in Kilgore, were in Alpine to see friends and came out to see me. We had a great time playing cards, telling lies and having a few refreshing beverages. We all left for East Texas the next day. On a secondary note, I finally acted on an urge I have had for five years. I made an offer to my friend and neighbor Eleanor for her 75 VW beetle. After her counter offer a deal was struck and I am now the proud owner of yet another VW. I'm sure Karol will be thrilled. Well I don't know how much of what happens out there is going to interest any one but me. Or even how much of what happens out in Big Bend I can or will repeat. So for now I will bid y'all adieu.......RRustyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01973047720563986814noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6017041940856579883.post-71336302378352168042011-08-20T11:26:00.000-07:002011-08-20T11:43:36.663-07:00This isn't Hell, but you can see it from here.I had decided to return for the summer in June, but my good friend and neighbor, Eleanor Foster, called and warned me that I maybe should wait until things really warmed up. It had only been hitting 117 or so in late June and early July and August might be more enjoyable. I returned to the desert in late July to get my fair share of abuse. I consolidated all of my solar panels and batteries to try and power a small air conditioner to attempt to mitigate the temperatures inside the adobe. That effort proved futile and I finally went to Alpine and bought an evaporative cooler which worked fine.
The work on the rock house consisted of covering up the framed up walls with boards I had acquired from wrecking out a building in Winona and boards that were given to me by Mike Hamilton from a gazebo. I also was able to connect the 3 water storage tanks with a manifold to ensure that all 3 filled simultaneously.

The owls that are living in the house now continue to be perturbed by my presence. I see them flying out of the windows as I approach in my truck. One day, after I walked in and sat down to contemplate my next move, I heard a rustling behind me. I turned around to see a rather large great horned owl sitting on top of wall staring at me. We began a stare-down and I thought that the owl would be intimidated and fly away immediately. After 15 seconds, I realized that the owl might have something else in mind. After half a minute had elapsed, I started thinking, "Do owls attack people?" I began to get concerned and not wanting owl talons to be gripping my jugular or any other vulnerable area, I thought about shooing him away. That was all that was necessary because he turned and flew away right then.

I read in another Terlingua blog that there are no posers out here, only survivors. I didn't know what to think of that statement at the time, but now I know precisely what they were talking about. Returning to East Texas and the air conditioning, I felt a tinge of guilt leaving my friends behind. But I will return soon and continue with my plan to have the rock house in the dry by the end of the year. (Not that it isn't dry enough already!)

Resumed work on window sills, framed up walls and set some tanks. My family was helping me near the end of this sortie so we got gutters up also. I do not know what I would do without my wife Karol and daughters Ayrton and Bailey, who show up right in the nick of time like the cavalry and boost the project ahead. And least I forget best friend Heidi who has been here at least twice and is a fantastic help also. Pretty, funny, hard working, and smart. That would only begin to describe all these women. I am indeed fortunate. I drilled the wall studs and pulled wire and cut boards that came from Winona and Houston to cover the walls. Am planning a return soon so I can get my fair share of abuse this summer. Come on Rain! Hea ya ho ya hea ya ho ya hea ya........thats my rain dance................RRustyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01973047720563986814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6017041940856579883.post-5154899615597614872011-03-18T08:41:00.000-07:002011-03-18T09:05:54.613-07:00Putting on the tinI waited , watching John Wells blog, until the temps rose above artic levels. Then gambled once again on good weather. Good gamble. Great weather for roof work. I was able to frame in for some windows that had been installed in the adobe. I did not like their look in the adobe and removed them. Not wanting to waste the money that was spent on the windows, of course, we bought the rock house project and found a place for them! Next time I will think that through a little better. Got the tar paper on. Two layers per Dean's advice. And screwed down some metal roofing. Karol rode out with me and helped for 10 days. I took her to the train station so she could get back to East Tejas in time to keep her job in Kilgore! Picked up the tin in Alpine and was able to get it down before it blew away. I'm already looking forward to getting back and finishing the doors and windows to "dry it in". The picture of the ratrod we built for Ayrton has nothing to do with the Big Bend project, but I wanted some of the guys out there to see it. I hope to have the windows ,doors and walls up by the end of the year. Adios.......RRustyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01973047720563986814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6017041940856579883.post-88960129310455473002010-12-08T08:04:00.000-08:002010-12-08T17:39:04.580-08:00putting in the ribs and skinI was able to return after two weeks back home. The backbone was in place so all I had to do was put in the ribs. I realize that four foot centers is not the norm, but the original build was done that way. With the addition of another beam to support the new roof, the area I was spanning only amounted to nine or ten feet on either side. After cross bracing, and the fact that I am using 10 " floor joists as rafters, I think I can keep this roof on. The references to Frankenstein is only because I am taking a dead house , adding parts from other dead buildings to create a new living breathing entity. I am hoping for a mild winter so I can return and finish putting her in the dry. I also hope to have her habitable by the end of next year. Not too much to tell from this trip. Enjoyed Regina's B-day party. Got to visit with Casey and Sara and saw the new additions to their place. Visited Arick for awhile along with Eva, Jerry, John, Dave, Jo, Larry, Don, Curtis, Dennis, Debbie at one time or another. I went by Jerry and Jane's place and met Morgan, their son. Went to Beechies to deliver an old state judge plate from Judge John Jackson's car for his collection. Saw David and Greg and the progress the are making is amazing. Hope to get the Baja Bug going while I am home. The adobe was working quite well and was comfortable the whole time. Sealed up some air leaks around the windows and doors and with the help from Eleanor's wood burner I was snug as a bug. Jan Jackson and her husband John came by to see me and left a ton of food. There was so much I was able to share with others. Eleanor and I ate togeather twice. I had Jo and Larry up to eat along with the girls. Jo invited me, along with Johnny & Sandy (friends that were visiting) to their Thanksgiving dinner. She and Melissa, her friend from Houston prepared the most wonderful dinner I have had in a very long time. I am very fortunate to know such people. Thank you so much.
